As a followup to the double fatal responding crash that killed Pratt (West Virginia) Ass’t Chief Michael Edwards and Lieutenant Tom Craigo. the most critically injured, Chief Tim Walker remains in ICU with serious head injuries and Firefighter Billy Hypes is also still in the ICU but is in stable condition.
Chief Edwards had 25 years of service as a Firefighter, and Lt. Craigo had about 15 years of service – both of these Firefighters killed are married and have children. Chief Edwards just got married approximately one week ago, Lt Craigo was just married in December.
They were wrapping up a training session Saturday with some younger firefighters when a call came in for a critical wrong way driver crash on the West Virginia Turnpike.
Chief Edwards and Lt Craigo responded in the front of the 5-person cab engine company while Fire Chief Timmy Walker, 42,, Firefighter Billy Hypes, 56, of Gallagher and Firefighter Kyle Jenkins, 17, jumped in the back. While responding, the apparatus left the road and violently struck a rock wall.
