THREE FIREFIGHTERS have been taken to hospital after their fire engine overturned on a 999 call this evening.

One crew member was trapped under the fire engine after it crashed at a roundabout at 9pm in Billingham, in Teesside.

A spokesman for Cleveland Fire and Rescue told the Sun Online: “The fire engine from Stockton Community Fire Station was one of five engines responding to an emergency incident in Middlesbrough.

The accident occurred on the roundabout at Billingham Bottoms where the vehicle overturned onto its side. No other vehicles were involved.

“On board were five firefighters, two escaped with no injuries whilst three sustained non-life threatening injuries and have been treated at University Hospital of North Tees.”

They said an internal inquiry had started to determine the cause of the crash.

A North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 9pm to reports of a road traffic collision.

“One crew member was trapped under a fire engine after it appeared it fell on its side.
