Amarillo police investigators have determined there was no intent or negligence in an incident in which a firetruck ran over and killed a man sleeping on a futon in an alley early Thursday morning.
Police initially thought that there were two trucks that drove down the alley behind V&M Discount at 1000 S.W. 10th Ave. An investigation revealed that only the firetruck drove down the alley on its way to a dumpster fire.
Traffic Investigation Unit officials said there will be no charges filed “as there was no criminal intent or negligence in the accident,” according to a press release.
On Thursday morning, police responded to a call of a man not breathing in the alley.
Officers determined Jesse Lee Lester, 63, had been sleeping on a futon in the alley and was struck by the firetruck. The preliminary autopsy stated that Lester died as a result of his injuries.
Niece Rebecca Mercado said Lester will be buried at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
