Holmes was given a $300,000 bond during his initial court appearance Tuesday. He faces charges of culpable manslaughter and aggravated assault.
Police say Holmes was illegally chasing a red Nissan Altima down the road with his red strobe lights on.
Police added that his actions caused the driver of the car to panic, which led to the car leaving the roadway and crashing into a tree.
One female passenger, identified as 20-year-old Marniqua Stamps, died at the scene. A second victim, 23-year-old Christianna Howard, was hospitalized and last listed in stable condition.
Vicksburg Police Chief Milton Moore said, “According to Marquise’s statement, this vehicle was driving pretty fast and he was making an attempt to get the vehicle to slow down, which is not his place.”
Surveillance video shows the volunteer firefighter turning around in a parking lot, with his lights on, to pursue the vehicle.
Witnesses came to the aid of the two victims after their car burst into flames.
Holmes has been suspended from the Fisher Ferry Volunteer Fire Department.
