IOWA RESPONDING RIG SIDE SWIPES VEHICLE

ROCK VALLEY—A Sioux Center teenager was injured in a crash and a fire truck responding to the accident sideswiped another vehicle Sunday, Aug. 16, three miles south of Rock Valley.

Eighteen-year-old Yovani Lopez-Chilel was driving north about 11:45 a.m. when he approached another vehicle that had turned onto Elmwood Avenue from 340th Street.

Lopez-Chilel lost control of his 2012 Lincoln MKX, which, entered the west ditch, struck a MidAmerican Energy Co. electrical utility pole and rolled, according to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office.

He was transported by the Rock Valley Ambulance to Hegg Health Center in Rock Valley.

Lopez-Chilel was cited operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license and no proof of vehicle liability insurance.

His vehicle received an estimated $10,000 damage. The MidAmerican property received an estimated $5,000 damage.

A Rock Valley Fire Department 2005 Spartan fire truck that responded to the scene sideswiped a 2009 Ford Expedition driven, which was parked alongside the roadway.

The fire truck was being driven south by 58-year-old William Laman of Rock Valley. The SUV was driven by 49-year-old Ricky Scott Koenen of Rock Valley.

No injuries were reported.

The Koenen vehicle received an estimated $1,250 damage. The fire truck received an estimated $1,500 damage.
