Griffith Fire Chief Roy Schoon’s department SUV was involved in an accident with a Griffith Public Schools bus Tuesday morning, police said.
The accident occurred at 8:10 a.m in the intersection of North Broad Street and West Elm streets. Schoon was driving his department SUV north on Broad Street with two firefighters as passengers when the school bus crossed Elm Street eastbound, Sgt. Keith Martin, spokesman for the Griffith Police Department, said.
Martin said the chief and firefighters were responding to a call for mutual aid at a house fire from the Highland Fire Department at the time of the crash.
There were no students on the bus. The bus driver was later transported by a supervisor to an area hospital to be checked for any injuries, Martin said.
The two firefighters in Schoon’s vehicle were transported by ambulance to an area hospital as well. Martin said one firefighter was believed to have minor injuries and the other went to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
Martin said the accident remains under investigation by Griffith police.
The accident occurred as many other accidents were reported throughout the Region on icy roads with blowing snow and dangerously low temperatures.
