The fire truck that was destroyed was on its way to a trailer fire when firefighters saw people pulling the driver out of the gas tanker and stopped to assist, Killeen Interim Fire Chief Kenneth Hawthorne said, adding that leaking fuel started the firetruck fire.
“Fortunately, it blew up and out,” and no one was injured, Hawthorne said.
Two hazmat special teams set up berms and kept fuel from going into the creek, he said.
The fire “got under” the roof of Mickey’s – leaving it damaged, Hawthorne said.
Mickey’s Enterprise was unable to comment, but the owners are aware of the situation.
Firefighters kept a water flow on the nearby transmission shop to keep it from burning. The building was a little scorched on the front.
Fort Hood sent two trucks to assist.
