A double house fire and a deadly collision between fire truck speeding to the scene and a normal vehicle.
One incident lead to another with devastating consequences.
21 July was a black day in Paarl as 4 people lost their lives in traffic.
On the 21st of July around 08.50 the farm-watch got the call regarding a fire starting at 2 houses in Amstelhof, a section of Paarl. Rapid response was needed and Paarl Fire brigade attended to the call and our farm watch members organised traffic and other services.
Unfortunately a fire truck on its way to assist with the fire fight, collided with a bakkie vehicle and the devastation was enorm.
We do not speculate what happened, but given the devastation, it appeared to be a collision with high speed and head on. Unfortunately and very sad 2 of the 3 people from the Bakkie died on the scene and the 3rd person ( unconfirmed at time of writing this ) reportedly died some time ago in hospital.
Some fire fighters also were admitted to hospital and we do not know there injuries.(One Fireman is in Critical Condition – all the other stable )
After all was organised, teams returned home, only to go out again at 14.30 as a member of the Drakenstein farm watch saw an accident between a taxi and a pedestrian happening in Jan van Riebeeck street in Paarl. All emergency services were again dispatched by our control over the radio network, but unfortunately there was no recovery possible and the person died on scene.
Our volunteers members acted professional and bravely, but loss of life is always a big traumatic experience when it happens right under one’s nose.
Paarl is a town near Cape Town in South Africa
Our condolences to all involved.
