A fire truck rolled off a city street and onto a lawn a couple of weeks ago and had to be winched out by a wrecker, a fire officials said Tuesday.
Deputy Fire Chief Geoffrey Low said the department is investigating why the wheels of Engine No. 5 hadn’t been chocked appropriately and whether the brakes hadn’t been set due to operator failure or a mechanical failure had occurred with the brakes.
Low said the engine had responded to an apartment complex on Center Street for a medical emergency.
After the incident, the truck was inspected and found to be free from damage, Low said.
Low said that in his 20 years with the department, he hadn’t heard of one of the fire trucks rolling away after it was parked.
Once the investigation is complete, Low said his department would report its findings to the City Council.
