Icy conditions caused a firetruck to crash into a store on New Leicester Highway on Saturday evening.
According to Barry Hendren, assistant fire chief with the Asheville Fire Department, the Station 6 truck was headed north on the highway, responding to a call of a fire alarm when it hit a patch of ice and the driver lost control.
The fire engine came to a stop after smashing through a wall of Kitchens Unlimited, 120 New Leicester Highway, sometime after 4 p.m.
One firefighter was transported to Mission Hospital with minor injuries, Hendren said. No one else was injured.
As of 6:15 p.m. Saturday a crew was working with the owners of the building to remove the truck without the structure collapsing.
“It’s very spectacular but lucky no one is seriously injured,” Hendren said. “We’re looking forward to the spring,” he joked.
