AL MAN STEALS FIRE CHIEF’S VEHICLE

A man has been booked into the Etowah County Jail after he allegedly stole a local fire chief’s official vehicle as the chief responded to a medical call, the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

Logan Cale Norton, 32, is being held on $6,100 in the county jail on charges of theft of property, attempting to elude, reckless driving and reckless endangerment in connection with the Wednesday incident, authorities said.

Glencoe Fire Chief Richard Johnson responded to a medical call on Burger Circle in the Tillison Bend community Wednesday when he noticed a man close the rear hatch of his black Tahoe, which was marked with “Glencoe Fire Department” down the side, the sheriff’s office said.

The suspect got inside the vehicle and fled the scene and Johnson radioed dispatch to report the truck was stolen on Burger Circle. An Etowah County sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop the truck but the driver refused, leading to a pursuit down Highway 431 toward Glencoe.

At one point during the chase, the suspect allegedly tried to hit a patrol vehicle and was driving on the wrong side of the road. The pursuit ended near Glencoe Fire Hall, where the suspect surrendered without incident, the sheriff’s office said.

In-car video from Johnson’s vehicle “clearly showed Logan Norton taking the vehicle” and the suspect “can be heard on the video narrating the pursuit as he was refusing to stop for law enforcement,” authorities said.
