We regret to pass on to you that on late last Saturday night there was a quintuple Firefighter Line of Duty Death in Chirundu Zambia. Five firefighters from the Chirundu Fire Brigade were killed in the Line of Duty and 2 other Firefighters were injured when their fire apparatus lost control and crashed while responding to a separate car crash. All indications point the cause of the crash being that the apparatus driver was driving too fast for conditions. See links below for crash photos.
Several of the fallen Firefighters had attended the recent fire academy that the United States based Africa Fire Mission (AFM) www.africafiremission.org hosted in Lusaka this past October. They were recipients of PPE donated by fire departments from across the United States through AFM. AFM has been finalizing the details of a return trip this September with a larger academy to help increase the training knowledge of the Zambian Fire Brigades. One of the key areas they are planning to train on was risk assessment. AFM will be increasing their efforts to raise the awareness of risk and situational awareness as they build the AFM cadre for the September 2016 training. Our sincere condolences to all those affected. RIP.
